Each year the TR Register Australia holds a National Meeting and Concours with the host venue moving annually from state to state. This year it is to be held in Toowoomba. TR Register Australia was formed in the mid ‘70s to facilitate restoration and preservation of English Triumph Sports Roadsters manufactured from 1953 to 1961 (TR2, TR3 and TR3A). The Queensland organisers of the 2010 TR Register National Meeting and Concours have chosen Toowoomba as the host destination at this time of year due to the proximity to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. The opportunity to see Toowoomba in ‘full bloom’ has sparked the interest of many Register members and their partners with almost 70 vehicles and 150 members attending from all over the country including Tasmania and Victoria. The Concours is an annual judging where each entered vehicle is lined up and judged – with awards available in a number of categories. It will be held from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, September 11 at the Godsall Street Oval of Queens Park. All welcome.

Rodger Davis with Nudgee GM Max Mason Some of Australia’s greatest professional golfers will converge on Toowoomba for this year’s staging of the $10,000 R & O Communications Senior Pro Am at the City Golf Club on Monday 2 nd August. Former Australian Open champion & three times Queensland Senior Open champion Rodger Davis will spearhead the field which also includes the likes of prolific Japan Tour champion Brian Jones, Australian Senior Open champion John Clifford plus the popular trio of Mike Ferguson, Jeff Woodland and Ossie Moore. Throw in a couple of former Queensland PGA champions and former City professionals Bryan Smith and John Victorsen and you have a top quality field of golfing greats. A field of 50 professionals will join local amateurs to contest the event which is a part of the Darling Downs swing of the Queensland Legends PGA tour. The City Senior Pro Am kick-starts a number of senior pro am events locally with Dalby, Chinchilla and Jandowae to follow. The real interest in this year’s tournament is the ‘red hot’ form of Rodger Davis who was a prolific winner of major events in his glory days in Australia and Europe. Davis played one of the greatest shots of his career last week to birdie the final hole of the Queensland Senior Open championship and claim an unparalleled third title at Nudgee Golf Club. With his drive bunkered on the left hand side of the fairway and his approach to the elevated 18th green obscured by an overhanging Moreton Bay Fig, Davis crisply struck his second to within six inches of the hole to claim victory. Amateur golfers have been invited to join the field of veteran professional greats with a 12 midday shotgun start on Monday 2 nd August. A presentation dinner and interviews with the golfing greats will follow that evening in the City Golf Club function rooms. For more details, contact the City Golf Club on 4636 9000.

Competitors awaiting their turn to launch. More than 40 sailplanes and their pilots will fly from Chinchilla in this year’s annual Easter Gliding Competition. The event, run by Caboolture Gliding Club and Gliding Queensland, will see massed launches from Chinchilla Airfield daily from Good Friday 2 April through to Saturday 10 April. “The sight of 40 sailplanes being towed into the air in quick succession by a small squadron of powerful tug aircraft is an exciting sight,” says competition organiser and Caboolture Gliding Club Chief Flying Instructor Brian Wade. “Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle, which will be starting from about 11 am every day of the competition.” “The Easter event has a reputation among soaring pilots as a friendly competition and this extends to visitors and onlookers, who are welcome to ask questions and be shown around by event officials after the launching is complete.” Among the 40 plus men and women flying from Chinchilla will be pilots who have flown in elite national and international competitions. Two of these are Darling Downs fliers Mike Codling and Alan Barnes, who will be using the Easter competition to hone their pair flying skills for the next gliding world championship in Europe. Mike and Alan, who fly with Darling Downs Soaring Club at Jondaryan, were selected as team representatives for Australia and have already flown together in Europe as part of their preparation for the worlds. Five recruits on Lifeline’s Green Army Recycling project have graduated with new skills and self-confidence after completing 23 weeks paid work. The State Government provided $228,000 to the Queensland’s Green Army project to employ 12 jobseekers at Lifeline’s Distribution Centre and Smart Tip Shop to reduce landfill by identifying reusable and recyclable materials. Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland Business Coordinator Angela Klein said the project included some accredited training so participants worked safely and gained some valuable skills. “Two participants have earned their fork lift licences and another completed a course and gained a Statement of Attainment so he can check, test and tag electrical equipment as safe.” Ms Klein said “We’ve also helped each person to improve their resume and we will keep supporting them as they start searching for their next jobs.” Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine attended the event and said the project had helped the wider community while offering the participants an excellent chance to sharpen their workplace skills. “All jobseekers can check their eligibility and I encourage them to register their interest in joining a Queensland’s Green Army project like this through the website www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 369 925.” L to R Lifeline General Manager Derek Tuffield, Philip Obote, Percy Popovich, Lifeline Business Coordinator Angela Klein, Emmanuel Mansaray, Charlef Ochan, Nick Dowdle, Lifeline board executive chair person Tai Soo Kim Watson, Lynnette Pirie and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine.
