Aussie Troops Celebrate Christmas Across the Globe
A traditional Christmas feast is a consistent theme linking more than 3600 Australian Defence Force personnel deployed on operations throughout the world this festive season. Deployed soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen have been celebrating Christmas Day in locations as far reaching as Afghanistan, the Middle East, Egypt and Sudan, with others closer to home in East Timor, Solomon Islands and on border protection duties in Australia’s north. Considerable effort was also made to ensure that soldiers serving in the outlying patrol bases did not miss out and enjoyed a special hot meal with tastes of home and an abundance of assorted treats. Commander of Australian troops in the Middle East, Major General John Cantwell, made a short visit on Christmas Eve to patrol bases near Mirawais in the Chora Valley to bring a Christmas message and, importantly, mail and resupplies. He spent Christmas morning with troops at Multi-National Base Tarin Kot before returning to the Australian national headquarters location at Al Minhad, UAE. Near Africa and the Gulf of Aden sailors onboard HMAS Melbourne embraced the Christmas spirit by hosting a slightly unusual “carols by cyalume” on the flight deck. Closer to home, Australian soldiers serving in Solomon Islands also commenced festivities with carols on Christmas Eve, followed by a Midnight Mass. On Christmas Day, the command team handed out care packages sent by the Australian public to the troops, followed by an afternoon of sports. As part of the International Stabilisation Force, Australian Defence Force personnel in East Timor hosted a group of 40 children from Dili’s St Bakhita Orphanage at lunch. Commander of Joint Operations Command Lieutenant General Mark Evans said, “During this Christmas period, all Australians should spare a thought for and be very proud of our deployed men and women who are serving their country with distinction on operations at home and on distant shores. They consistently demonstrate Australian values, professionalism and compassion and are held in the highest regard amongst their peers and all whom they encounter”. Continue reading

White Ribbon Day This Thursday
November 25 marks White Ribbon Day, the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In Australia, the White Ribbon campaign works to prevent violence against women by encouraging men and boys to take positive action to create change. The campaign aims to have all Aussie men take an oath and “swear” never to commit, never to excuse and never to remain silent about violence against women. This year, the campaign aims to have one million Aussie men take the oath! One in three Australian women will be a victim of physical or sexual violence or abuse in her lifetime. They are the mothers, sisters, daughters or friends of men across Australia. In support of this significant day, a gold coin donation breakfast will be held in Toowoomba at Laurel Bank Park on Thursday 25th November at 7.00am. Wet weather venue is now St Mary’s Hall, cnr Hill & West Streets…. The Toowoomba Rotary Club will combine with both Zonta International Clubs in Toowoomba to cater for the gathering and emphasise the need for citzens to speak up about violence in the community. The White Ribbon campaign is supported by the White Ribbon Foundation as a national campaign to prevent and reduce violence and abuse of women. It is unique because of the focus on encouraging men to take the lead in their immediate communities and networks, by speaking out about violence and challenging the attitudes that allow violence in our society. You can join the ranks of men supporting the campaign by swearing at www.myoath.com.au or by wearing a white ribbon or wristband on White Ribbon Day, November 25, you can show your support for the campaign. White Ribbons and wristbands will be available on the day or prior at any Heritage Building Society branch. For more information about White Ribbon Day visit www.whiteribbonday.org.au Continue reading

Western Downs Community Services to Benefit from Study
RHealth, through the Western Downs Communities Network (WDCN), has begun a study into professional development opportunities for the Western Downs’ community services sector. The project, which has been made possible with support from QGC, will ultimately deliver tailored professional development workshops that help local community workers improve their ability to prepare successful funding proposals and manage community development projects. RHealth Manager, Trish Leddington-Hill, said the first step of the project would involve conducting a training needs assessment of Western Downs’ community services workers, including paid and unpaid people working in education and childcare, health and aged care, community support, sport and recreation, community groups and emergency services. “With a number of major resource companies beginning operations in the Western Downs area, we expect there will be more funding opportunities available to the community,” she said. “It will become increasingly important for community organisations to understand how to access funding from a broad range of organisations”. WDCN is an established network of organisations across the Western Downs that work together to improve the liveability of the region. Lead agencies include RHealth, Western Downs Regional Council, Queensland Government and Spiritus. WDCN Co-ordinator, Natalie Drake-Brockman, said the training needs assessment supported by QGC will value-add to information gathered previously by WDCN. “WDCN’s connection with community service providers across the Western Downs means it is well placed to conduct the training needs assessment,” she said. “The information gathered through this consultation will be very important in building an accurate snapshot of the needs, skills and capacity of our community groups.” QGC Social Performance Gas Fields Manager, Tony Heidrich, said QGC was pleased to be supporting the study. “This is an important first step in understanding how QGC can best assist the community services sector to make full use of funding opportunities offered by the development of the coal seam gas industry in the Western Downs region,” he said. (QGC Limited (ACN: 089 642 553) is a leading Australian coal seam gas explorer and producer focused on supplying cleaner hydrocarbon energy to growing domestic and international markets. QGC is establishing one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects to turn world-class reserves of coal seam gas into liquefied natural gas (LNG). Queensland Curtis LNG, a priority project for QGC, involves expanding exploration and development in southern and central Queensland and transporting gas via a 380km buried pipeline to Curtis Island near Gladstone, where it will be liquefied. For further information visit: www.qgc.com.au) For information on how you can take part in the training needs assessment, please contact Natalie Drake-Brockman at westerndownscn@gmail.com or on 0401 293 841. Collaborating Universities Announce Sustainability Education Milestone
In a world first, the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) and City University of Seattle have collaborated to develop a bachelors level accounting degree designed around the United Nations Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI is an international standard for business to report against a range of key indicator protocols under the categories of economic, strategy and profile, product responsibility, society, labour practices and decent work, human rights and the environment. By co-accrediting two new courses developed by CityU of Seattle, to be delivered in the existing USQ Bachelor of Accounting and Sustainable Business (BASB), the program has become the first to comprehensively embed the principles of the GRI within the curriculum. USQ BASB Program Coordinator Dr Geoff Slaughter said while many programs dealing with sustainable business cover the general principles of the GRI, USQ was the first to use the GRI indicator protocols as a basis for curriculum development. “This will give our students a great advantage, as they will have a clear understanding of what the GRI protocols entail and how to report against them,” Dr Slaughter said. “The BASB program is accredited by the Australian Certified Practicing Accountants (CPA) Association and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA). It is designed to produce graduate accountants equipped for a world where sustainable business, and all its associated reporting requirements, is not only a reality but a priority. “To achieve this, unlike normal accounting degrees, there are courses in environmental science, sustainable business, sustainable accounting and finance. The program now also includes two newly co-accredited CityU courses of Corporate Social Responsibility and Fair Labour Practices.” Associate Dean of the CityU School of Management, Tom Cary said the GRI principles are the future of responsible businesses. “We are preparing students to have a thorough, detailed knowledge of its requirements. The partnership between USQ and CityU brings a unique and global perspective on sustainable business for the students.” Dean of USQ Faculty of Business, Professor Allan Layton, said the relationship USQ has with CityU has the added benefit of including a number of co-accredited courses allowing graduating students of the USQ BASB to also qualify for the award of CityU Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Sustainability. “Students thereby receive two degrees – one from Australia and one from the US – for their four years of study of the USQ BASB, a really terrific outcome for students,” Professor Layton said. Director of USQ Springfield Campus, Doug Fraser, said the redesign of the program more clearly defined what sustainable business education was about. About the University of Southern Queensland The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) has forged a reputation as one of Australia’s leading providers of on-campus and distance education programs in Australia. With more than 75 per cent of students studying via distance or online, USQ is at the cutting edge of flexible delivery of resources and technology. From Arts, Business and Education to Sciences, Engineering and Surveying, the University continues to develop programs and courses that reflect the changing needs of society. USQ has three campuses located in Toowoomba, Springfield and on the Fraser Coast and welcomes international students from more than 100 countries each year. About City University of Seattle Founded in 1973 in Seattle, Washington, City University of Seattle is a private, not-for-profit university that serves more than 8,000 students worldwide each year, with more than 45,000 alumni worldwide. City University of Seattle’s mission is to change lives for good by offering high quality and relevant in-class and online education options to any person in the world with a desire to learn. The university is comprised of the School of Management, the Gordon Albright School of Education, and the Division of Arts and Sciences.
