Toowoomba Region Residents Urged to “See The Signs”
Doctors’ concerns for the mental health of Queenslanders following a devastating summer of natural disasters have prompted AMA Queensland to launch a new state-wide campaign urging friends and family to look out for each other. The ‘See the Signs’ campaign has been officially launched by AMA Queensland President Dr Gino Pecoraro. The aim of this initiative is to help Queenslanders including Toowoomba residents tell if someone isn’t coping by providing a practical checklist of common symptoms. We also want to make sure people know their GP is there to help,” Dr Pecoraro said. “An additional survey of AMA Queensland members found almost 60% of doctors had seen or expected to see a spike in mental health cases. More than half (52%) thought the affects of the recent natural disasters would continue having an impact on the mental health of Queenslanders for at least the next 12 months. “In the immediate aftermath of a flood or cyclone it’s common for people to show emotional numbing and even to appear as if in a daze but if this continues for more than five days it may be a sign they need extra support. The sevens Signs identified by AMA Queensland to help indicate whether a person is having difficulty are: 1. Complaints of continued poor sleep with ongoing nightmares. 2. Observations a person is easily overwhelmed, tearful or fragile. 3. The use of drugs or alcohol to suppress intense emotions or to try and achieve sleep. 4. A pattern of withdrawing from family and friends and not engaging in day to day discussions that generally allow people to slowly debrief. 5. Problems performing at work such as struggling to concentrate on the job at hand. 6. Startling easily and declining invitations for social engagements and other usually pleasurable activities. 7. Increased or unreasonable irritability with family, workmates or friends. Far North Queensland General Practitioner and AMA Queensland Councillor Dr Sharmila Biswas said if a person was still demonstrating these behaviours this long after the floods and Cyclone Yasi it was time to seek help. “Generally these signs can be easily observed and may be useful starting point when talking to someone you care about,” Dr Biswas said. “Referencing changes in a person’s behaviour is often less threatening than directly challenging changes in their personality. For example, statements like ‘I don’t think you’re coping’ are less helpful than ‘I’ve noticed you’ve had some trouble managing lately’.” Single parents and children between eight and 15 years of age are considered most at risk of a mental illness following a natural disaster. Elderly people are also at risk, especially in situations where family members or carers have been affected. Girls, women, small business owners and ethnic minorities are at greater risk of developing post a traumatic stress disorder as are rescue workers, volunteers and those with a direct exposure to trauma. Queenslanders in need of advice or support should consult their local GP. To locate your closest AMA GP, download the free AMA Find a Doctor App. Alternatively the service can be found online at www.amafindadoctor.com.au Continue reading

Aussie Troops Celebrate Christmas Across the Globe
A traditional Christmas feast is a consistent theme linking more than 3600 Australian Defence Force personnel deployed on operations throughout the world this festive season. Deployed soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen have been celebrating Christmas Day in locations as far reaching as Afghanistan, the Middle East, Egypt and Sudan, with others closer to home in East Timor, Solomon Islands and on border protection duties in Australia’s north. Considerable effort was also made to ensure that soldiers serving in the outlying patrol bases did not miss out and enjoyed a special hot meal with tastes of home and an abundance of assorted treats. Commander of Australian troops in the Middle East, Major General John Cantwell, made a short visit on Christmas Eve to patrol bases near Mirawais in the Chora Valley to bring a Christmas message and, importantly, mail and resupplies. He spent Christmas morning with troops at Multi-National Base Tarin Kot before returning to the Australian national headquarters location at Al Minhad, UAE. Near Africa and the Gulf of Aden sailors onboard HMAS Melbourne embraced the Christmas spirit by hosting a slightly unusual “carols by cyalume” on the flight deck. Closer to home, Australian soldiers serving in Solomon Islands also commenced festivities with carols on Christmas Eve, followed by a Midnight Mass. On Christmas Day, the command team handed out care packages sent by the Australian public to the troops, followed by an afternoon of sports. As part of the International Stabilisation Force, Australian Defence Force personnel in East Timor hosted a group of 40 children from Dili’s St Bakhita Orphanage at lunch. Commander of Joint Operations Command Lieutenant General Mark Evans said, “During this Christmas period, all Australians should spare a thought for and be very proud of our deployed men and women who are serving their country with distinction on operations at home and on distant shores. They consistently demonstrate Australian values, professionalism and compassion and are held in the highest regard amongst their peers and all whom they encounter”. Continue reading

Another Flood Rescue
Shortly before midday a Triple Zero call was received by police from an unknown motorist who observed a distressed driver and his vehicle caught in floodwaters on Clark Street at Clifton. Sergeant Guy Smidt from Clifton Station attended the area known as the Black Gully causeway to find a vehicle stranded in deep floodwater. The 19-year-old Toowoomba man and his vehicle were on the verge of being washed off the causeway and down the creek. With little time left to act the police officer, with the assistance of the QFRS, risked his own life to reach the trapped driver with a rope. QFRS then dragged the driver and the police officer to safety. Both men were uninjured. A very short time later the vehicle was washed off the causeway and was completely submerged. Situations like these highlight the dangers of attempting to cross flooded causeways. Floodwaters are unpredictable and can rise and fall rapidly, quickly inundating vehicles and putting the lives of occupants and rescue workers at risk. “This young man could have very easily been swept into the flooded creek and we could have had a tragedy on our hands,” Sergeant Smidt from Clifton police said. “We cannot stress enough the dangers of driving in wet conditions and the dangers of floodwaters that can rise without warning. The 19-year-old has been issued with a Notice to Appear for driving without due care and attention. He is to appear at the Warwick Magistrates Court on January 25. Issued by Police Media Media and Public Affairs Branch Continue reading

The exhibition also provides the opportunity for industry-based workers, like kitchenmakers, to explore the possibilities of original, one-off work. This exhibition will be officially opened by Master Craftsman, Laurens Otto on Wednesday 29 September at 5pm – all welcome. www.usq.edu.au/artsworx 07 4631 1111 Continue reading
