Five recruits on Lifeline’s Green Army Recycling project have graduated with new skills and self-confidence after completing 23 weeks paid work. The State Government provided $228,000 to the Queensland’s Green Army project to employ 12 jobseekers at Lifeline’s Distribution Centre and Smart Tip Shop to reduce landfill by identifying reusable and recyclable materials. Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland Business Coordinator Angela Klein said the project included some accredited training so participants worked safely and gained some valuable skills. “Two participants have earned their fork lift licences and another completed a course and gained a Statement of Attainment so he can check, test and tag electrical equipment as safe.” Ms Klein said “We’ve also helped each person to improve their resume and we will keep supporting them as they start searching for their next jobs.” Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine attended the event and said the project had helped the wider community while offering the participants an excellent chance to sharpen their workplace skills. “All jobseekers can check their eligibility and I encourage them to register their interest in joining a Queensland’s Green Army project like this through the website www.greenarmy.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 369 925.” L to R Lifeline General Manager Derek Tuffield, Philip Obote, Percy Popovich, Lifeline Business Coordinator Angela Klein, Emmanuel Mansaray, Charlef Ochan, Nick Dowdle, Lifeline board executive chair person Tai Soo Kim Watson, Lynnette Pirie and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine.

Goal to see 50 teams registered by Saturday Toowoomba Relay For Life is only five weeks away, and the committee would like to see 50 teams registered by the end of this week. “The committee and I are really looking forward to seeing 50 teams register by the end of this week,” said Miss Kenyon, Relay For Life Co-ordinator for Cancer Council Queensland. “30 teams have currently registered and we’d like to see 100 teams participate in this years Relay For Life.” To aid participants not familiar with registration or wanting more information the committee is holding a Registration Assistance Day at The Ridge Shopping Centre, outside Woolworths, this Saturday February 6. “This registration assistance day gives the community a chance to register their team and ask questions face to face”. Relay For Life is a fun, outdoor fundraising event where teams of 10 – 15 people take turns to walk/run around an oval while celebrating local Survivors, remembering those lost and fighting back against cancer. Locals are encouraged to pitch a tent, camp overnight and enjoy the community atmosphere. The Toowoomba Relay For Life will be held March 13-14 2010 at the Clive Berghofer Events and Recreation Centre – Toowoomba Showgrounds. Teams can register by calling 1300 65 65 85, online at www.relayforlife.org.au or by visiting the committee this Saturday at The Ridge Shopping Centre. Reunite service by Crime Ctoppers Qld Crime Stoppers Queensland has launched a bold new community safety initiative called the Reunite Service. The Reunite Service is simple, effective and secure and utilises the Crime Stoppers call centre to help reunite parents, guardians and carers with those in their care, should they become separated. It is a web based system where the public register those in their care onto a secure database. The database will be accessed only by the Crime Stoppers call centre when a person is reported separated. Uniquely numbered identification “face” cards and a matching numbered wristband will be issued with each registration, with the wristband being worn by the registered person and the face cards carried by the parents, guardians or carers. If a person becomes separated they can ask for help and show their wristband. A call is made to the Crime Stoppers call centre quoting the identifying number. The call centre then contacts the parent, guardian or carer directly. If contact can not be made the local police are called to attend. Alternatively, if it is discovered that a person is missing, the parent, guardian or carer makes the call to Crime Stoppers quoting the identifying number from the face card. The Crime Stoppers call centre then raises an alert and electronically distributes the person ’s crucial identification information and image to local Police. The service is available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week from the low single per annum cost to the user of $9.95. Help will only be a phone call away when you need it most by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 . For peace of mind register your loved ones today on the Reunite Service website . Your local school can also get involved as a fund raising incentive of $2.00 per registration will be offered to schools for the first six months of the service.
