Celebrated Musicians Return To Toowoomba on March 30th
Internationally renowned violin/piano duo, Spiros Rantos and Brachi Tilles will return to Toowoomba this week to open the University of Southern Queensland’s (USQ) 2011 Twilight Series. Having just returned from a tour of France, Spain and Portugal, their Twilight Violin and Piano Recital will aptly be a journey through musical styles, cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Israeli-born Brachi and Greek-born Spiros have toured the world performing, recording and sharing their love of music for the past four decades.“We feel that music is always a ‘trip’, be it a spiritual one or a visit to different cultures and times. The items we have chosen for the program are all ones which we love to perform – each of them creates a distinct mood or tells a story.” “Brachi and I met back in the 1970s, at a train station in Vienna and not long after, we started a chamber music ensemble,” said Spiros. “After two years of successful seasons at the Musicverein and the Vienna Concert Hall, we spent six months in the USA and, in 1976, visited Australia for an Artists-in-Residence program at the (then) Victorian College of the Arts.” In 1978, they were invited to join the teaching staff in the newly established music program at USQ (then DDIAE). For eight years, they made Toowoomba their home, establishing strong foundations for music at the University and contributing to the cultural life of the city. “We were the first full time music performance lecturers at USQ and in those years there was a rapid build-up of the music school and the local classical music scene.” Although the couple left Toowoomba in 1986, they have not lost touch with the city or its music scene, returning on a regular basis to make guest appearances. The program will include Beethoven’s much celebrated ‘Champagne’ Sonata, three charming bagatelles by Sibelius, Konstantinides’ Six Greek Dances from the Dodecanese Islands, Manuel de Falla’s Dance Espagnole, Russian’s composer Rodion Schtchendrin’s In the Style of Albeniz, works by Argentina’s Astor Piazzolla, and Aaron Copland’s Hoe Down. The Twilight Violin and Piano Recital will be presented at 6pm in the USQ Arts Theatre on Wednesday (30th of March). Tickets to the recital are $18 adult, $15 concession, $13 student and $8 child and can be purchased through the USQ Artsworx Box Office on 07 4631 1111 . Police Advice on Prince William’s Motorcade Sunday 20th March
Public viewing areas and traffic closures for Royal Visit Motorists and visitors to Ipswich, Grantham and Toowoomba on Sunday should expect road closures and delays as the royal motorcade passes through these areas. Police are urging people who wish to see the Royal Motorcade to pay close attention to road closures and designated viewing points. “Motorists and visitors to these areas will need to expect delays and remain patient when travelling on the roads or waiting for traffic to clear,” Superintendent Joe Whyte, Toowoomba District Office said. “Police will close roads in advance of the motorcade, and reopen them once the motorcade has passed to ensure a smooth traffic flow. There are going to be delays and we advise motorists to plan early if they intend to stay for the motorcade.” Police request people attend the public viewing areas to ensure their safety as the motorcade passes. “People who go to what police consider an unsafe area will be moved on,” Superintendent Whyte said “Again we ask that people remain calm and courteous to each other and not step onto the road or place themselves in danger.” “People who wish to view the motorcade should arrive in plenty of time and bring food and water in case there is a long wait.” Road closures will be in place at: Ipswich District There will be altered traffic conditions on Wulkuraka Connection Road, Haggerty’s Avenue, Redhill Road, Harwoods and Clarkes roads from 9am to 1pm. More Than 40 Gliders To Soar From Chinchilla For Easter Competition
Competitors awaiting their turn to launch. More than 40 sailplanes and their pilots will fly from Chinchilla in this year’s annual Easter Gliding Competition. The event, run by Caboolture Gliding Club and Gliding Queensland, will see massed launches from Chinchilla Airfield daily from Good Friday 2 April through to Saturday 10 April. “The sight of 40 sailplanes being towed into the air in quick succession by a small squadron of powerful tug aircraft is an exciting sight,” says competition organiser and Caboolture Gliding Club Chief Flying Instructor Brian Wade. “Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle, which will be starting from about 11 am every day of the competition.” “The Easter event has a reputation among soaring pilots as a friendly competition and this extends to visitors and onlookers, who are welcome to ask questions and be shown around by event officials after the launching is complete.” Among the 40 plus men and women flying from Chinchilla will be pilots who have flown in elite national and international competitions. Two of these are Darling Downs fliers Mike Codling and Alan Barnes, who will be using the Easter competition to hone their pair flying skills for the next gliding world championship in Europe. Mike and Alan, who fly with Darling Downs Soaring Club at Jondaryan, were selected as team representatives for Australia and have already flown together in Europe as part of their preparation for the worlds. Other pilots are coming from as far away as New Zealand to compete in this year’s Easter competition. Further information: Garrett Russell 0412 374 477 gjr@powerup.com.au Continue reading
