Drew Hutton to Address Toowoomba’s World Environment Day
Veteran environmental campaigner Mr Drew Hutton will be a special speaker at Toowoomba’s World Environment Day at Lake Annand Park on Sunday 6 June 2010. Mr Hutton is currently focusing his activities on coal seam gas and coal mining, after decades of wide-ranging concerns. Last week he addressed 400 farmers at a protest meeting near Nangwee on the Darling Downs. Toowoomba World Environment Day Committee spokesperson Mr Neil Riethmuller said many people are still unaware of the scale of the imminent threat of mining on the Darling Downs. “What we think of as a food and cotton producing area will largely vanish if exploration results in exploitation of below-ground substances.” “Toowoomba’s World Environment Day offers an excellent opportunity for the interested public to hear an expert in his field, and discuss alternatives.” World Environment Day will commence at 10am and run until 4pm. The wet weather venue is Gabbinbar State School. Everyone is welcome to attend. Further information: Neil Riethmuller Ph. 07 4634 7693 Continue reading

Hospice gets a Sweetener!
In recent months Queensland X-Ray patients and staff have bought and eaten their way through $6000 worth of chocolate… but it’s all been in aid of a good cause. Money has been raised for The Toowoomba Hospice which is a private, six-bed health care facility offering palliative care to those who have a terminal illness. Queensland X-Ray’s Ms Julie Abel, who organized the fundraiser, was on hand to present Mark Munro from the Toowoomba Hospice with a cheque for $6,000.00! Ms Abel wanted to thank every one who supported the Chocolate Drive “Sincere thanks to everyone who has helped raise this money, it’s for a really worthwhile cause and I hope that everyone has enjoyed eating the fruits of their labour.” Mr. Munro mentioned how important it was to have the support for businesses and organisations like Queensland X-Ray supporting the Hospice and he also wanted to reassure all who donate money to the hospice; that it stays here “The Hospice is a Local Charity and I am very proud to say that the money raised locally stays locally to support local families on the Downs and Lockyer Valley” Julie Abel and Mark Munro Checkout the Chocolates that have helped raise $6000.00 for the Toowoomba Hospice. Happy Trekker Tag Along Tour
The Rotary Club of Toowoomba East(RCTE) have been running Tag alongs for the past 15 years…. traditionally we have run “OUTBACK GETAWAY “ bi-annually, which is a fully catered tag along that is accompanied with a 4 piece band and support vehicles, and has auctions of donated goods raising up to $100,000 for various charities. This year the club is running Happy Trekkers for the first time. Happy Trekkers is a BYO Tag along that will have Country Singers & Bush Poet entertainment, and vehicle support. We will have a large mobile BBQ & a Wood Chuck Wagon providing fuel for the communal campfire which will be the focal point at night. The adventure will have 3 two night stay’s and 1 one nighter. (And at least 2 locations where an evening meal may be arranged, together with Shearing Quarters type accommodation.) The trek will start at Toowoomba, go West of Tenterfield in the Torrington State Recreation Area & then wind its way East through Washpool National Park, the Yabra National Park, the Richmond Range, the Toonumbar National Park, and the Border ranges taking in some of the best scenery including that on private properties, returning to Toowoomba via Main Range National Park following the head waters of the Murray/Darling waterway in Qld. We will be staying at a farm stay, a 4wd park, a resort on the Clarence River and a Park and will radiate around those venues sightseeing & enjoying the country-side highlights. Vehicles with low range will be able to traverse all sections, however those without (but with good clearance), will be escorted through alternate routes as appropriate. Off-road campertrailers are welcome but caravans will be unsuitable. The trip is being supported by members of the Downs 4WD Club who will act as “Trek Marshalls” responsible for route matters and safe conduct. The route is planned to be limited to “Medium” classification as per Outdoor Sports & Recreation Competency Standards. The Trek will be leisurely with “time to smell the roses” averaging about 300k/day with a lay-day mid week with action contained, on that day to canoeing, other river activities & Bird watching, or simply relaxing by the Clarence River. ..the HT route takes you through some really fantastic scenery & you will love the Fun & Fellowship!
