Revitalised Millmerran SES Goes to the Rescue
Whilst many parts of Queensland prepare for recovery efforts as water begins to recede Police and Emergency Services would like to remind the community of the dangers of flood waters and damaged roads. Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Brett Pointing said that emergency services have attended a number of incidents where people have entered flood affected areas. At Milmerran SES responded to a car in floodwater on the Gore Highway which was inundated for three kilometres with levels as deep as three metres. Following its de-activation in 2008 due to a lack of volunteers, Millmerran and surrounding areas did not have close SES support and relied on assistance from Cecil Plains or Pittsworth, but the unit was reactivated only a matter of weeks ago after a new contingent of volunteers finished their training. The rescued man told Millmerran SES members he heard rumours that the road could be crossed safely. Police have charged this man for driving without due care and attention. “There are multiple road closures in many parts of the State. These closures and interruptions are constantly changing as flood levels rise and fall. Obey road closure signage and please plan your trip and make sure you check the available information on road conditions from websites,” said Assistant Commissioner Pointing. The Gore Highway to Millmerran is closed between Brookstead and Millmerran until further notice. Motorists are urged to delay any trip along this road, or where possible find an alternative route. A swift water rescue team also had to rescue a man at Perry Road, Bundaberg North last night around 11pm. He suffered minor injuries. Continue reading

More Than 40 Gliders To Soar From Chinchilla For Easter Competition
Competitors awaiting their turn to launch. More than 40 sailplanes and their pilots will fly from Chinchilla in this year’s annual Easter Gliding Competition. The event, run by Caboolture Gliding Club and Gliding Queensland, will see massed launches from Chinchilla Airfield daily from Good Friday 2 April through to Saturday 10 April. “The sight of 40 sailplanes being towed into the air in quick succession by a small squadron of powerful tug aircraft is an exciting sight,” says competition organiser and Caboolture Gliding Club Chief Flying Instructor Brian Wade. “Visitors are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle, which will be starting from about 11 am every day of the competition.” “The Easter event has a reputation among soaring pilots as a friendly competition and this extends to visitors and onlookers, who are welcome to ask questions and be shown around by event officials after the launching is complete.” Among the 40 plus men and women flying from Chinchilla will be pilots who have flown in elite national and international competitions. Two of these are Darling Downs fliers Mike Codling and Alan Barnes, who will be using the Easter competition to hone their pair flying skills for the next gliding world championship in Europe. Mike and Alan, who fly with Darling Downs Soaring Club at Jondaryan, were selected as team representatives for Australia and have already flown together in Europe as part of their preparation for the worlds. Millmerran Health & Wellbeing Expo 2010
The Millmerran Multipurpose Health Service will be holding the biennial health expo at the Millmerran Sports Centre on Thursday May 20th, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. Please note the new venue. This year we are asking a wider range of health service providers, sports, craft and beauty services. In past years, exhibitor feedback indicated that the Expo is a valuable tool in promoting their business or activity in this community. The Expo will be open to the public of all ages, free of charge to access the many displays featured. Schools will be invited to come along. There will be activities eg. food and nutrition for school students to take part in. This Expo will give our community more insight into the services available locally and regionally.
