Police Advice on Prince William’s Motorcade Sunday 20th March

Public viewing areas and traffic closures for Royal Visit Motorists and visitors to Ipswich, Grantham and Toowoomba on Sunday should expect road closures and delays as the royal motorcade passes through these areas. Police are urging people who wish to see the Royal Motorcade to pay close attention to road closures and designated viewing points. “Motorists and visitors to these areas will need to expect delays and remain patient when travelling on the roads or waiting for traffic to clear,”  Superintendent Joe Whyte, Toowoomba District Office said. “Police will close roads in advance of the motorcade, and reopen them once the motorcade has passed to ensure a smooth traffic flow. There are going to be delays and we advise motorists to plan early if they intend to stay for the motorcade.” Police request people attend the public viewing areas to ensure their safety as the motorcade passes. “People who go to what police consider an unsafe area will be moved on,” Superintendent Whyte said “Again we ask that people remain calm and courteous to each other and not step onto the road or place themselves in danger.” “People who wish to view the motorcade should arrive in plenty of time and bring food and water in case there is a long wait.” Road closures will be in place at: Ipswich District There will be altered traffic conditions on Wulkuraka Connection Road, Haggerty’s Avenue, Redhill Road, Harwoods and Clarkes roads from 9am to 1pm. Children’s Book Week Celebrations

Local primary school children are being encouraged to celebrate Children’s Book Week this week (August 21-27). Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine Week said “With the State Government’s continued focus on improving children’s literacy, Children’s Book Week represents another opportunity to help us spread the word about the importance of reading, and to encourage young Queenslanders to learn to love reading from an early age. I urge parents to make the most of any Book Week activities and celebrations taking place at local schools.” Children’s Book Week is organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and this year marks the program’s 65th anniversary, with the 2010 theme ‘Across the Story Bridge’. Member for Toowoomba North, Kerry Shine had quite a few interested students when he was invited to read a mystery book at the Rockville State School library. Mr Shine went on to say “Currently more than 60,000 students from 400 schools are involved in the fifth annual Premier’s Reading Challenge, which sets reading targets for all primary students in Queensland. The Challenge finishes on August 27 and I’m told we’re on track to better last year’s results where more than 1.2 million books were read during the campaign.” Further Information: Phone: 4638 5755 or Email: toowoomba.north@parliament.qld.gov.au Continue reading

Intrepid Heritage trekkers race to the top of Mt Everest

It’s a tough trek to the top of Mt Everest, but that hasn’t stopped 20 teams of staff members from Heritage Building Society in Toowoomba from launching a race to the summit. Workmates from Clifford Gardens, Grand Central and K-Mart branches, along with multiple head office teams, have set out with the top of the world in their sights. Even more impressive is that they are doing it without oxygen tanks, parkas or gloves, and without even leaving the neighbourhood! That’s because the teams are tackling the Everest Virtual Challenge, a unique fund-raising event sponsored by Heritage Building Society that supports sick kids at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. The concept is simple. Teams of up to 15 people are aiming to walk 10,000 steps a day in the two weeks between May 17 and 30. If they do that, the team will collectively total 2.1 million steps, which is the equivalent of walking to the top of Mt Everest. Teams use pedometers to track their steps and gather sponsors along the way. All money raised goes to the Royal Children’s Hospital. The target is $150,000 by the end of the two weeks. Heritage CEO John Minz said the event was potentially life-changing, in more ways than one. ”Each year, the Royal Children’s Hospital cares   for more than 30,000 children from all over Queensland and beyond. About 60 per cent come from regional and rural areas. “Through the support of the community, the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation works wonders for sick kids by investing in groundbreaking research leading to faster diagnoses, better treatments and ultimately cures for childhood illnesses. “The money raised by the Everest Virtual Challenge contributes directly to these life-changing projects. “And the Challenge is fantastic because it also encourages people to improve their own health by getting out and exercising. Walking 10,000 steps a day could be life-changing- and perhaps life-saving – for participants as well. Altogether Heritage Building Society has entered almost 400 staff members in 33 teams – that’s from a total staff of 700. If you would like to help sponsor the Everest Virtual Challenge event, inquire at your local Heritage branch or log onto the website at www.workingwonders.com.au .
