June 15th Twilight Recital Cancelled
The USQ Twilight Song Recital scheduled to be presented in the USQ Arts Theatre on 15 June has been cancelled due to illness. One half of the IkonMusic duo, soprano Emma Baker-Spink, has been struck down with a severe case of laryngitis and is unable to perform. The next recital in the series will see local jazz ensemble Swing On In perform an evening of traditional jazz favourites with a contemporary edge, at the Twilight Jazz Recital on 29 June – bookings and enquiries – USQ Artsworx Box Office on 4631 1111. Queensland Day Celebrations in Pittsworth on Sunday June 12
This year marks the 152nd anniversary of Queensland becoming a separate colony from New South Wales. Here in Pittsworth we will be celebrating the occasion on Sunday 12 June at the Pioneer Village. Once again the Queensland Day Committee has organised a full program. Admission will be free. A highlight this year will be the display of over 90 historic motor vehicles. Participants in the Queensland Historic Motoring Council’s 2011 rally will be joining our celebration and giving local car enthusiasts the opportunity to view some quality vehicles from yesteryear. The cars will be on display from 9.30am and visitors will be able to purchase tea, coffee and scones from the Beauaraba QCWA ladies. Official proceedings will begin on the covered stage at 11am with the welcome by Cr. Ros Scotney from Toowoomba Regional Council. Allan Petersen, who will be the MC for the occasion, will then invite Cr Ros to read the Declaration of Queensland Day. This will be followed by the flag raising ceremony led by the local Guide group and Mark Schuster will perform “God Save the Queen”. Proceedings will then move to the Post Office where Cr Ros will officiate at the naming of one of the display rooms. Local land holders will then have the chance to record their cattle or horse brands for posterity on the Branding Board for $30 each. There will be displays by White Mischief and Amazing Soaps and the Craft Shop will be open. Gail Parish, Ruth Taylor and Barbara Harris will also have a lace and spinning display in the Post Office. Local gardening identity Penny McKinlay will be presenting a talk in her unique style. Old time children’s games will be organized by Allan Petersen and Bill Krautz to ensure the day rounds off with a family flavour. There’s no need for anyone to go hungry. Ron and Lyn Pearce and their helpers will use their camp oven expertise to provide traditional Aussie favourites such as stew, billy tea and damper with syrup. Cook’s Softdrinks will be on sale during the various activities. Mark Schuster will continue performing on his button accordion throughout the morning and the Queensland Day Committee is awaiting confirmation on other musical entertainment. Make sure you bring the family and join in what should be an enjoyable celebration at the Pioneer Village. It is envisaged that activities will be finished by 2pm. Cultural Heritage Network 2011 Seminar a Success
‘Looking outside the museum’s walls – making the most of your town’ was the theme of the Cultural Heritage Network – Toowoomba Region’s 2011 seminar held at Nobby on Saturday 28 May. As the title suggests, the day was jam-packed with information. Delegates experiencing the Nobby Heritage Guided Walking Tour Held at Rudd’s Pub, Nobby, the Seminar provided delegates with the opportunity to learn methods of engaging with local communities and raising heritage awareness, with examples from Eumundi and Nobby showcasing how it can be done. It offered delegates an occasion to network and discuss common issues with other organisations in the Region. At the Nobby Forge Vintage Museum Opened by Councillor Ros Scotney, the Seminar had over 30 attendees from as far afield as the Western Downs and Wandoan. President of the Network, Karen Barrett said, “The annual seminar provides a great opportunity for cultural heritage organisations within the Toowoomba Regional Council area to learn, catch up and be reminded that they are not alone on this journey.”The full day program included presentations and workshops on tour guiding and public programs. Hosted by Ken and Louise from the Nobby Forge and Vintage Museum, attendees also took part in a Heritage Guided Walking Tour of Nobby with Narelle Maddison from the Nobby Heritage & Development Association. Help Needed for Highfields Family
I am writing this in the hope of getting a shout out to assist in gaining community support for a fundraising activity I am trying to coordinate to raise money for a local family, Brenton and Anna Schulz and their children Grace and Emily. 10 year old Grace Schulz has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. The Schulz family live in Highfields and Anna Schulz has given up her full time job to stay in Brisbane with Grace at Royal Children’s Hospital for a myriad of tests, procedures and of course chemotherapy. All of these tests and treatments are a lead up to major surgery that is planned for July/August to remove the tumor in Grace’s femur. Grace has been unable to walk since the diagnosis due to the weak structure of the bone and will likely not walk for the best part of a year or more. Little Emily Schulz is staying in Toowoomba with Dad Brenton, and Anna tries as much as possible to either get to Emily in Toowoomba or get Emily to Brisbane for a visit. Emily misses her Mum and sister a lot! As you can imagine, the emotional rollercoaster that the Schulz family is on is only made more difficult with the financial burden of maintaining a mortgage, expenses for travel, hospital stays and medical care. Grace attends school at Highfields State School and I have tried to access their school oval to host a Family Fun Beanie day and monster garage sale however we due to lack of public liabiity insurance it wasn’t possible. All we need is a venue with some grass to play some games with the kids, have a BBQ and a space for people to bring unwanted goods to sell for this charity. I have also started making a wide range of Butterfly Beanies to sell to raise additional funds. We are going to ask people on the day to wear a beanie or purchase one of ours to support young Grace who after her second round of chemotherapy has already lost her hair. I am also looking for volunteers to help before hand and on the day, loans of equipment (eg tables, BBQ, shade tents), clowns, a face painter and anyone who has any further bright ideas for fun!! If we can get this day off the ground we are looking to hold the event on Sunday 26 June and Beanies will be a must by then I’m sure!! I have set up a bank account for donations and will be meticulously keeping record of all funds contributed in order to maximise use of every dollar. Region’s Cyclists Competing in USQ Ride the Range Sunday May 15
The Toowoomba Range is the domain of cyclists today, Sunday 15 May for the inaugural USQ Ride the Range event. Approximately 250 riders are tackling the course which started in Toowoomba at Picnic Point, progresses along to Flagstone Creek road, through the Lockyer Valley and Gatton districts before the cyclists return to Picnic Point via the Toowoomba Range. Professor Bill Lovegrove, Vice-Chancellor and President of USQ is proud to support the event and wishes the 25 strong USQ team well in the event. “The event supports the Prostate Cancer Association of Australia and has been organised through the Rotary Club of Toowoomba,” Professor Lovegrove said. “Many of the event organisers are members of USQ Corporate Club and we all hope the Challenge will grow into a major tourism event over the years to come.” The riders have two ride options, a 60km option where they ride to Helidon, or a 100km ride to Gatton and back. HMAS Stuart Rescues Hostages off Somalia
HMAS Stuart has intercepted a Yemeni-flagged dhow and rescued three crew members who were being held hostage by Somali pirates off the Horn of Africa. The Royal Australian Navy frigate is deployed to the Middle East, conducting maritime security, counter-terrorism and counter-piracy operations with the Combined Maritime Forces. The interdiction occurred on the morning of Monday, 11th April 2011, after HMAS Stuart had been monitoring suspected pirate activity in the area for several hours. The Chief Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Mark Evans, said he was very pleased with the way HMAS Stuart’s crew handled a difficult and dangerous mission. “No shots were fired by either HMAS Stuart or the pirates during the interdiction and no threats were made by the pirates to harm the Yemeni crew once they saw the boarding party rapidly secure the dhow,” Lieutenant General Evans said. “Stuart’s boarding party did extremely well in maintaining the safety of the dhow’s crew and ensuring a potentially challenging situation did not escalate.” The Al Shahar 75 was attacked and seized by pirates about 20 days ago. Fifteen Somali pirates surrendered to HMAS Stuart’s boarding party as they approached the Al Shahar 75. During a search of the dhow, the boarding party located 11 AK-47 assault rifles with 16 magazines, a large quantity of small arms ammunition and a Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher with grenade. The weapons were catalogued and then disposed over-board. The unarmed pirates were released in their skiff after being provided with adequate water, food, fuel and communication equipment to make the nearest land-fall off the Somalia coast. Murphy’s Creek Debris Cleanup & Restoration Project
The Helidon Hills/Murphy’s Creek Landcare Group in conjunction with SEQ Catchments, Lockyer Valley Regional Council, and the Queensland and Australian Governments are hosting a BBQ on Friday 8th April, 2011 to formally launch the Murphy’s Creek Debris Cleanup and Restoration Project. Representatives from the Helidon Hills /Murphy’s Landcare Group including President, Henk Hagedoorn, and Project Community Coordinator, Snow Manners will be in attendance at the Recovery Centre, Murphy’s Creek Grounds, Jessie’s Lane, Murphy’s Creek, together with representatives from SEQCatchment and Lockyer Valley Regional Council. This 3 month project will involve the clean-up and limited creek restoration of 24 kilometres of Murphy’s Creek extending from Ballard in the west to where the Fifteen Mile Creek enters, east of Murphy’s Creek township. Its focus is to restore the environmental integrity of the creek. Cleanup activities will centre on removing the remaining rubbish/litter that accumulated along the creek during the January 10 flood not already removed, as well as removing or moving selected fallen trees that threaten the stability of the creek bank. Following cleanup efforts some limited restoration activities will occur which will include weed control, revegetation and riparian fencing. On ground activities will commence Monday 11 April 2011.
